Musings about Compost

Did you know, the best farmers know that farming is not the art of cultivating good plants, but of cultivating good soil?
Compost and soil are not dead they are full of living things. Soil is made up of 45% mineral particles like stone, clay, sand and silt. 5% is organic matter like humus, roots & organisms – your compost. The other 50% is air and water, about half and half but this does vary.

So what’s this got to do with sandwiches? Arguably not much because food scraps such as meat, fish and dairy products should never be put on the compost heap. But lettuce stalks and damaged salad leaves can, and that’s where ours are going….our allotment compost heap. The worms are loving it.
